Recent recession concerns point to the economy and to job losses. I heard recently from old line political thinking, that the economy may become more important for voters than the environment. This is a false dychotomy.
Canada is currently the largest energy user on a per capita basis in the world.
In a Green economy, industries are energy efficient thus reducing their operating costs.
In a Green economy, jobs are created. For example there are tens of thousands of ‘green-collar’ jobs in the retrofitting of businesses, houses, and buildings towards energy efficiency, as well as thousands more jobs in the implementation of a national railroad strategy.
In a Green economy, businesses and homes will become energy self-sufficient allowing for sustainable local economies.
In a Green economy, Canada will become globally competitive and a global leader in alternative and renewable energy technologies.
In a Green economy, tax payers would save more than $1Billion in perverse subsidies to the record-profit-making fossil fuel industry.
Most importantly, a Green economy will protect humanity by dealing with our environment and the current climate crisis.
The economy and the environment are not two separate entities. They are inextricably linked. Let’s face it – without drinkable water, breathable air, or food, there will be no economy.

This would be a great site to provide a list of Green products and their manufacturers. They would help us make wise green choices when shopping for our families and our homes and businesses. Please create these lists for us all.
Nora:
Your idea to create a list of Green products and manufacturers is great! I will mention this in our next executive meeting and suggest we include it on our main website.

My remarks at the Mississauga-Streetsville Greens campaign school on March 01, 2008 - lead by Chris Hill:
These are great times for the Green Party both nationally and locally. Nationally, we are growing faster than we could have imagined just two years ago. Locally, our organization has taken a life of its own with people like Santi Cappuccitti and Chris Hill heading the process and working tirelessly on a daily basis – and now we see Peter Creighton taking on an active leadership role as well.
Nationally, we have reached 16% in the polls at times. We have been ahead of the NDP several times, ahead of the Bloc Quebecois constantly, and even ahead of the Liberals in Alberta at times. And the Harper Conservatives are starting to attack our policies because they are feeling threatened by the Green Party.
Locally, we could not have a better chance to win the seat. We have a Member of Parliament who switched political parties without the consent of his voters and has been fined for violating electoral law.
But besides having very good chances of winning this time around. I feel it is imperative the Green Party gets a voice in Ottawa. And I say this mainly because we continue to be governed by elitists groups whom have lost touched with people like you and me.
On the one hand, we have a Harper government who wants to lead us completely into the wrong direction – a direction with fewer civil rights, more fear mongering, war, and a complete disregard for the climate crisis.
On the other hand, we have an opposition party, which has nothing to contribute and seems to be imploding. The only time they find some opposition strength it is to criticize some unproven backroom deal.
The Green Party needs to be elected because we have issues that no other political party is talking about. We talk about a Carbon Tax, which is indispensable in order to get the prices right in terms of energy choices and allowing reductions in income tax and payroll taxes.
We have been talking about a continuing role in Afghanistan with more Islamic nations in charge of peace and security in the South, a legalized poppy trade for medicinal use, building a National Army Logistics capacity – and most of it, way before the old-line political parties were still talking about either staying or leaving.
We are the only ones talking about a cancer prevention strategy including a toxic free Canada, about enshrining in the Charter the right of Canadians to an ecological heritage including the right to drinkable water and breathable air.
We are the only ones talking about pay equity and equal opportunity for women, about re-negotiating NAFTA, declaring Canada a Nuclear free zone, reforming the IMF, WTO & World Bank, Shifting international trade from free trade and towards fair trade, shifting away from measuring the economy in terms of GDP to measuring it terms of GPI (genuine progress indicator or index of well being) and much, much more.
However, with the current political configuration in Ottawa it is just the same of the old stuff. So let’s get working to elect the first Green Party caucus in Canadian history and start thinking about forming government in less than a decade.

After the excitement of the American election I was saddened to learn that all the work at community building for the GPO in Mississauga Streetsville has been destroyed by the decision of the leader of the party. It is difficult for me to understand how the views of a few people who have a track record of incompetence and a vested interest in protecting their record of inaction are given any credence.
I have supported the Greens federally both financially and at community events to build public awareness. When asked, i welcomed the opportunity to serve hotdogs, pour hot cider and engage in dialogue on all issues green with the people of streetsville.
On the provincial level,
I provided an audience for Frank when few did, at the butterfly release and presented a strong presence at the annual meeting of the hertiage seed organization.
We worked to form a provincial assiociation and held the founding meeting with the active participation of the president and the former candidate.
Politics is not a forum for self delusional people to feel important. It is a serious business that requires people to actually get off their asses and plan their work and work their plan. It truly is about relationships and building bridges Frank. I agree. We have been doing just that with the entire community with little or no help from your posse of little people.
It is obvious from the results of the less than stellar campaign federally on the part of the party
many of you are very busy playing at grass roots politics rather than doing the work on the street to DO grass work politics.
Tragically the calibre of those who are undermining our hard work does not ingender trust or respect. What a sad day for the Green movement.
Well its a different tale if you go to the Mississauga News. On there is a summary of our GPC and GPO people taking back the local associations, after the parties brass realized what was up here. Suffice to say we are rid of the interlopers and will get back to our business. You see politics is about relationships, so you need people who can work with other people not mouth off to them. We can now begin to translate the reality of GPO platforms to people not the pie in the sky drivel "friends of greens" or "all things Green"
Honest hard people prevailed here at the wish and direction of their party ... maybe those guys can take their awesome skills and help the NDP since platform is never an issue to them, hell I don't even think they know we had one.
good bye and good luck
